Utopia as Method, based on the work of sociologist Ruth Levitas, is a way of thinking and acting for (educational) researchers and practitioners who wish to engage with alternative futures that go beyond problem solving. In this paper, we offer conceptual and theoretical context to utopia as method, as well as a practical example.
In this slide deck, the key attributes of Utopia as Method are summarised.
We offer group ‘provocations’ (online or in-person) – with an opportunity for follow-up sessions – wherein we apply this imaginative approach to thinking and taking action. We focus on a theme/challenge/idea that is pertinent to your context. We will work through the history of this theme/challenge/idea , reflect on your values and principles and (re-)imagine how you might implement alternatives, starting today. At the start of the session, we will also briefly look at the conceptual and theoretical background of utopia as method.
If you are interested in organising a provocation, get in touch!
